Michelle Lara is a second-year medical student at New York Medical College. Originally from Long Island, New York, she graduated from Harvard College with a degree in Neuroscience and a secondary in Global Health and Health Policy. She served as Clinical Director of a Harvard Medical School free clinic for immigrants. She worked at the Institute of Politics, gaining early experience at the intersection of health, research, and policy.
Following graduation, Michelle spent two gap years at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where she contributed to research through maternal-child health and postpartum care programs. This experience allowed her to see how qualities such as immigrant status and race directly shape healthcare access and outcomes, and further influenced her commitment to addressing structural inequities through medicine.
As a native Spanish speaker and the daughter of two first-generation immigrants from Ecuador and Argentina, Michelle brings a personal awareness of the barriers faced while navigating the healthcare system. She believes that supporting those who face the most barriers to care is what ultimately elevates the well-being of an entire society.
